About the book
“Most of the mistakes senior operators make are not made in ignorance.”
They are made in a hurry. Before You Answer is a very short book — barely a hundred and fifty pages — about the discipline of the pause: the practice of holding a decision, an email, a hire, a firing, a public statement, for the twenty-four hours it usually needs to age into something you will not regret.

Good in parts, thin in others. The concept is strong and the writing is clean, but at a hundred and fifty pages I finished it wanting a bit more depth. Would still recommend to a junior colleague.
— Karan MalhotraJuly 2026A tight, sensible book. Nothing revolutionary, but that is almost the point — Kapoor is writing about a discipline, and disciplines are boring on purpose. I read it in one flight and will re-read the last chapter.
— Sneha ReddyJuly 2026Short, useful, and mercifully not padded. Kapoor's central point — that most of our worst decisions are made in the first ninety seconds — is one of those things you know once someone says it clearly. I am trying the twenty-four-hour rule for the next month.
